The Kansas Jayhawks have hired Florida Gators offensive coordinator Charlie Weis to be their new head coach.

Weis was a long time assistant in the NFL before becoming the head coach at Notre Dame. He then worked for a year as the Kansas City Chiefs as their OC before departing to Florida to join Will Muschamp’s staff.

The Turner Gill era at Kansas was a disaster. The hire of Weis very likely could work out. They don’t play defense in the Big 12, and Weiss is an offensive genius.

Weis wasn’t great at Notre Dame, but he came close to figuring it out. If he can learn to delegate duties then he might end up being a good college head coach.

The best tweet I saw about the Weis hiring said something like this, “I hope Kansas didn’t throw out Mangino’s wardrobe.”

The Butler Bulldogs are returning to the Final Four next week in Houston after beating the Florida Gators 73-70 in overtime on Saturday afternoon in New Orleans.

Florida led 33-32 at halftime behind senior center Vernon Macklin who had 15 first half points.

The Gators came out strong in the second half to push the lead to 51-40 by breaking down Butler’s interior defense for several powerful slam dunks.

Butler compounded their problems by missing one rushed 3-pointer after another.

Then Matt Howard and Butler’s 3-point shooting came alive to narrow the deficit to just 3 points with 5:28 remaining. With the appearance of Butler’s offense, Florida’s left them.

Butler’s 13-4 run over the course of 5 minutes tied the game at 57-57 with just under three minutes left.

With 33 seconds to play Howard caught the inbounds pass and was fouled as he threw up a shot near the rim. Howard made 1 of 2 free throws to tie the game up at 60.

Florida’s Erving Walker dribbled the remaining 32 seconds of game clock out before chunking up a contested three-pointer that was off the mark, sending the game into overtime.

Butler’s Howard and Khyle Marshall made the first two field goals of the overtime period (along with Marshall’s FT) to give Butler a quick 65-62 lead 90 seconds into the extra frame.

Kenny Boyton hit a straight-away three with 2:20 left to tied the game at 67-67. After two Butler free throws, Walker hit a three pointer to put Florida up 70-69.

Mack responded with a three of his own to put Butler back up 72-70.

Florida made one of two free throws to bring it within 1 point.

Out of the timeout, Mack bricked a three from eternity. Surely not what Butler coach Brad Stevens had directed his team to do during the time out.

Florida rebounded Mack’s brick and called a timeout with 29 seconds remaining and the shot clock turned off.

Butler BULLDOG Matt Howard grabbed the rebound off the wild shot before being tied up. Possession arrow to the Bulldogs.

Mack was fouled in the backcourt off the inbounds. He went to the free throw line where he rolled the first one in and swished the second to put the Bulldogs up 74-71.

Walker took a three with 8 seconds left but clanked it off the rim as Butler corralled the rebound and the win 74-71.

Butler returns to the Final Four for the second consecutive season. They made it all the way to the National Championship game last year where they were beating the the last seconds.

Butler’s Mack and Howard finished with 27 and 14 points respectively.

Vernon Macklin led the Gators with 25 points.

Butler’s Shawn Vanzant led the Bulldogs to a 33-24 halftime lead with 9 first half points. Matt Howard was impressive as well in the first with 8 points. The Bulldogs defense limited the Badgers to just 35% shooting and created 8 turnovers in the first twenty minutes.

The Bulldogs defense was tenacious, especially in the 2nd half where they held the Badgers to just 3 points until 10 minutes was left in the game.

Howard was his ‘junkyard bulldog’ self with 2 steals, 12 boards (3 offensive) to go along with his game high 20 points. He held Wisconsin’s talented Jon Leuer to just 3 points on 1-12 shooting.

Howard’s sidekick Shelvin Mack added 13 points.

The Badgers, who were down 18 at one point with 14 minutes remaining, battled back to get it within 3 in the last minute behind a high-pressure press that was creating turnovers off the trap in the coffin corner.

However, Butler held on and hit their free throws to secure their second consecutive Elite 8 appearance.

Wisconsin was led by Jordan Taylor’s 22 points, most of which came late in the second half.

Most college basketball followers knew that when BYU Cougars big man Brandon Davies was kicked off the team for breaking the school’s honor code that it would be nearly impossible for the Cougs to advance as far as they potentially could have in the NCAA Tournament.

So BYU became more Cinderella in the NCAA Tourney without Davies. And with any good fairy tale, it was just a matter of time before the carriage turned back into a pumpkin.

All-American Jimmer Fredette was good on Thursday night against the Florida Gators, but he was more often than not missing (11-29) under heavy defensive pressure and scheme defenses.

When the game went to overtime Fredette disappeared. He missed both shots he took and turned the ball over twice. Fredette seemed tired and worn down in the extra frame. Florida outscored BYU 15-6 in overtime.

BYU coach Dave Rose took Jimmer out with less than a minute to play for one last curtain call.

He still managed to score 32 points and hit a handful of amazing shots, but his performance was not enough as the Gators were too athletic, talented, and deep for the Cougars, down in New Orleans, as Florida won 83-74 in overtime.

Gators senior Alex Tyrus had the game of his life with 19 points and 17 big rebounds. Kenny Boyton had 17 points. Point guard Erving Walker chipped in with 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists.

Chandler Parsons had the best all-around game as he scored 16 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and dished 7 assists for Jorts Nation.

The Gators starting 5 was just too much. They combined to score 77 of their 83 total points.

And it’s now official as multiple outlets are reporting Meyer’s resignation including Gator Zone:

Meyer, 46, informed Florida Athletic Director Jeremy Foley over the weekend that he was contemplating resigning and the two finalized the plan Tuesday. Meyer told the Gators of his decision during a team meeting earlier this afternoon. UF has scheduled a press conference for 6 p.m. at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium where Meyer and Foley will address the media.

Meyer will remain Florida’s head coach through the Outback Bowl in Tampa on New Year’s Day.

“I have been a Division I football coach for the last 25 years and, during that time, my primary focus has been helping my teams win titles,” Meyer said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it, and I am a fierce competitor to my core. At this time in my life, however, I appreciate the sacrifices my 24/7 profession has demanded of me, and I know it is time to put my focus on my family and life away from the field. The decision to step down was a difficult one.

After all, isn’t that his new December tradition? He quit the team last year for ‘health’ reasons only to announce days later he would be back coaching the Gators in the Swamp in 2010.

Mississippi State Bulldogs fans have to be nervous, as their head coach Dan Mullen will likely be tapped to replace Meyer at Florida. Mullen was the offensive coordinator at Florida, under Meyer, when the Gators were actually good.

Mullen will be eager to get away from the Cam Newton fallout brought on by Mississippi State alum. He also would have to be thrilled to go to Florida or Miami where he could actually recruit. Not much has happened in Starkville since the Super Wal-Mart went in there several years ago.

Top Candidates to Replace Urban: Dan Mullen, Bob Stoops, Chris Peterson
