Dunking over a car.  Awesome idea.  It drove the fans at the 2011 NBA Slam Dunk Contest wild.  Everyone knew it was coming.  Everyone was waiting for it.  But now there’s evidence that the idea was not original.  At least, not from Slam Dunk champion Blake Griffin.  If fact, it looks like Griffin got the idea from a fan.  A fan who thinks he deserves a little recognition for coming up with the dunk that most people would agree won the contest.  According to TMZ:

The guy with the gripe is Michael Scrivner – who claims he was watching ESPN earlier this month when he saw Griffin asking fans for dunk ideas … so he fired off a twitter message to Blake on Feb. 8 specifically outlining the car dunk — complete with the pass from inside the sun roof.

Scrivner’s upset that Griffin took the idea and didn’t even thank him for it.  Which makes sense.  It would be nice for our idols to at least acknowledge fans, especially when the fan does something that directly affects their career.

Scrivner adds, “If he already had the idea for the dunk, why go on SportsCenter asking for ideas? It would be one thing if I had said to just dunk over a car, but the dunk was spot on everything I suggested.”

Then again, it’s not impossible that Scrivner and Griffin came up with the same idea independently.  But it is conspicuous.

The first rookie All-Star in eight years then brought back an impossibly difficult favorite with his first dunk of the final, sticking his arm into the hoop and hanging from it by his elbow, just as Vince Carter did while winning the 2000 contest.

And when fans saw the car driving out of the arena tunnel, this contest already seemed to be over.

…Griffin received 68 percent of the fan voting that determines the final result.

Griffin is on his way to being a superstar in this league.  And he looks like he’s having a helluva good time doing it.  Griffin plans on giving the Slam Dunk trophy to the parents of Wilson Holloway, his former teammate who passed away last week from cancer.

But lets focus on the positive, shall we?  There was one piece of defense in this ridiculous 245-point slugfest between two stumbling teams.  Check out the monster block JJ Hickson put on Blake Griffin late in the second half that helped seal the win.

The Cavaliers have a chance to make it 2 in a row – shudder to think – by beating the Washington Wizards at home on Sunday.  The Wizards are actually the one team in the NBA that could finish behind the Cavs this season.  This is gonna be epic.

My favorite video basketball game from my childhood, and the most popular arcade basketball game of all-time, NBA JAM is coming back this fall for the Wii, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360.

The game will be sold as NBA JAM for the Wii and will be included with and part of NBA ELITE 11 for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

Each NBA team on the game will have three to four active players to select from each team to play with along with a team legend or mascot.
