The problem is in the name. We expect the UFC – Ultimate Fighting Championship – to be just that; the ultimate. But occasionally, it’s just fighting. No incredible knockouts, no awesome submissions, no amazing off-the-wall roundhouse kicks to the head. And sometimes, it’s just not very good. Case in point: Jackson vs Hamill at UFC 130 on Saturday Night. According to Yahoo Sports:
The card was not very captivating, but the main event made it seem even worse. Hamill said he would break Jackson’s will, but all that was broken was the will of the spectators to watch more.
Jackson said he had a broken hand but fought anyway. It appeared that way, as he didn’t land a lot of punches, though he clearly won the fight.
Many fans expect to see Rocky III every time the cage closes, or Blood Sport, or even Kickboxer. There’s got to be some dramatic, badass, boot-to-the-head knockout or the entire card is a bust.
Though it was a win, it was hardly a great audition for Jackson for a title fight against light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Jackson bloodied Hamill’s mouth but never landed the big shot he has been known for and did little to please the fans.
The crowd booed loudly throughout the third round and when the fight ended, the angry fans booed even more lustily. A couple of thrown beers landed near the cage.
The fact is that a lot of UFC fans would be better off spending $10 on half-a-dozen chop-sockey movies from the 80’s instead of paying 50 bucks to watch two guys smack each other until the ref declares a winner. That’s snoresville, especially if you’ve got a few friends at your place to watch the event. But hey, that’s why all those awesome fight movies exist…that and all the super-cool training montages.
