Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Manny Ramirez has decided to retire after testing positive for violating Major League Baseball’s (MLB) performance enhancing drug policy.
“Major League Baseball recently notified Manny Ramirez of an issue under Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program,” the statement said. “Rather than continue with the process under the Program, Ramirez has informed MLB that he is retiring as an active player. If Ramirez seeks reinstatement in the future, the process under the Drug Program will be completed.”
MLB said it would have no further comment. A second positive test under the program results in a 100-game suspension, and a third test results in a lifetime ban.
Ramirez was suspended for 50 games by MLB in 2010 for taking a female fertility drug known for masking steroid use.
Manny had agreed to a 1- year, $2 million contract with the Rays for this season.
He played his career with the Indians, Red Sox, Dodgers, White Sox, and a handful of games with the Rays this season.
Will the Hall of Fame ever coming knocking for Manny now? He was never open and friendly with the press, that votes for the Hall, and two drug suspensions could be the nail in his HOF chances.
His final MLB numbers will include 2,545 hits, to go along with 555 home runs, 1,831 RBI’s, and a career .996 OPS.
