When you’re sitting at the NFL Draft with the #1 pick, you’ll either strike gold or end up with something on par with Ryan Leaf. Okay, NO one is on par with Ryan Leaf. That guy’s suck was clearly epic. Nevertheless, it’s usually boom or bust. So, for the Carolina Panthers to seriously consider investing in former Auburn star, Cam Newton, they have to believe he’s the best bet on the board regardless of position.
Newton currently sits anywhere between #3 and #11 in most of the planet’s draft rankings, but no one has considered taking him overall until now.
New Panthers coach Ron Rivera told the assembled media at the NFL Combine that Carolina is considering about 10 players with the top overall pick. Newton is apparently one of those players, and the Panthers’ front office plans on bringing him to Charlotte for a private workout.
“He’s a tall, powerful young man,” Rivera said. “He’s got great athletic ability. He might be the better athlete of all of [the QB prospects]. But again, the one thing he does have is he’s got a great arm. And he’s a winner. You go back to his junior college and his college days, you can’t pass that up, either.
Newton calls himself a “talent and an entertainer”. Well, if he’s taken #1 overall, he better be a superstar for the Panthers or he might just be remembered as another miss in the Draft. Not as big of a miss as Ryan Leaf of course, but after all, Cam’s only human.
