The official Cardinals Twitter account (@cardsinsider) stated on Wednesday morning, “At this time things don’t look good, will have more info after he sees doctors.”
Cards GM Jon Mozeliak told reporters he believes it’s a “significant injury,” according to Cardinals beat writer Derrick Goold.
Wainwright has been the runner up to the NL Cy Young award winner each of the past two seasons.
Wainwright tore the same ligament back in 2004. He felt discomfort in the joint during one of his final starts last season.
Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa stated, “It appears to not be good.”
UPDATE: Mozeliak was just on 590AM radio and stated that he believes Adam will need Tommy John surgery. If so his recovery will take 12-15 months. The injury took place Monday while Wainwright was pitching at Spring Training.
UPDATE 2: Derrick Goold tweeted the following about Wainwright’s contract extension: “To clarify: Wainwright’s $21-million, two-year option was triggered by Cy Young finish, but it hinges on finishing 2011 not on DL. #stlcards”
UPDATE 3: Mozeliak believes the club will look within to replace Wainwright in the rotation. ESPN’s Buster Olney said that it is possible the Cards could sign Kevin Millwood.
